The Letter S

Today's post is being brought to you by the letter S (or possibly F).  More specifically, for shin splints!  Stooooopid, shin splints 15 days before my half marathon where I was (and still am) going to kill my previous PR and show the course who the boss is.

I noticed it on Wednesday.  Tuesday, I put in 3 miles in 33 minutes (ok, not super fast, but fast for me) and felt great.  Wednesday, I finished my first mile (9:45 pace--thank you very much) I went to slow down and OUCH.  My shins were on fire!  Same results last night.  Started running and when I wrapped up, the shins were burning again.

To say that I am frustrated is an understatment.  I have managed to go an ENTIRE year with out shin splints (yes, I have had injuries, but never shin splints).  Last week, I switched from the Brooks Trance 8 to the Trance 9 and I really hope thats not the problem (because they are such a comfortable ride).  I also  have been doing a lot of treadmill running this last week, and at speeds that are much faster than I am used to.  I am going to chalk it up to the speed.  Woops--guess I went too much too fast!

I hoping with a bit of rehab, some aleeve, some icing and extra stretching I should be good to go in 14 days.

Any suggestions to help alleviate the pain, other than what I mentioned above?

Thanks for reading the whine-fest.  Just needed to vent a little!

Thanks for all the suggestions a couple weeks ago regarding the naseausness I would get after a hard workout.  I started eating more carbs and drinking more water than usual; those seemed to do the trick!

I used to get terrible shin splints. I don't remember where I read it, but I read that you should do squats with toes up and squats with heels up. I've never had them again - not sure if it's those exercises or just got used to running and used to my shoes! It might be worth a try.

I bet it is the speed too. And maybe your body adjusting to the shoes. All I would suggest is ice too. Good luck! :)

I have them badly... finally invested in a pair of Zensah compression sleeves and that appears to be helping a lot.

When I had shin splints earlier in the year, I went for an ART massage, painful but helped.

Yuck, I'm sorry =(
I ran that fast run yesterday and have some leg issues now too, so I agree that it's probably the speed!

ICE! As many times a day as possible. It's the #1 thing you can do to help.

Compression would be #2. Do you have sleeves? I agree with Kathryn. They're the best investment you can make. They even have TNT purple ;)

With only 15 days left, I don't know if the exercises will help, but they're good for the long term. There is a link to a video at the bottom of my sidebar.

Do you have a group run tomorrow?

Oh no! I've had them before and they suck! Come to think of it, I got them when I was wearing Brooks, too. It's probably just a coincidence, though. :)

Get lots of rest, elevate, and ice! Don't worry, we're still going to kill this half. PR's are coming our way.

I battled shin splints a lot, and I've noticed that anytime I try to work in speedwork (or try to run faster than normal) my shins become very angry with me. Ice & motrin help! Hope you are feeling better.

I would be back in those old shoes faster than you can blink. the last time I got shin splints it was about 10 after getting new shoes - I took those babies right back to the store for a full refund. Either way, rest up -- you can totally beat this. :)

wow...out of nowhere? that's so frustrating! i used to get them when i played basketball. the sprinting and stopping all the time. i just did stretches and iced. i'm sure compression would be a huge help. hope it feels better soon!

I've been told to take a steady dose of ibuprofen - Aleve will help with the pain but ibuprofen will take care of the inflamation. So I'm on 2/day for the week leading up to the race, and on race day I'll take 2 before and 2 during (if I manage not to lose them on the course!)

Best of luck! I'll be thinking of you and your shins Saturday - hopefully it keep me from going crazy with nerves :)
